A White Desert Fair
In the pincer-shaped state of Gujarat, split between the man-made border of India and Pakistan, lies a stretch of aforementioned strangeness of a desert. Unbearably hot (upto 50°C – it’s a desert after all) in summer and submerged underwater during monsoon, the Rann of Kutch becomes a wondrous swathe of pristine whiteness during winter: it is the world’s largest salt desert. And yes you can use it directly on salad (but don’t).
The district of Kutch – where the “Rann” or Desert is located –is one of the most ecologically and ethnically diverse district of the state; so your trip won’t be ‘just’ about a (magnificent) desert! Since 2005, the state organizes the annual Rann Utsav or Desert Festival which takes visitors on a tour of the region while introducing the indigenous culture through various programs. It runs from 17th December till 15th February. Besides the festival, there are wildlife sanctuaries to visit in the surrounding grasslands, local arts, music and handicraft to experience and hot balloon rides to embark.
Arrive in Bhuj, well connected to both rail and air ways, and continue the journey (you’ll need to take a permit from the DSP’s office) to the Rann of Kutch (about 90Kms from here), making a stopover at Dhorodo or Hodka village. Check yourself in at a traditional Kutchi Bhunga (mud hut) style resort and carry onwards in the best way to get around in a desert – Camel rides! Makeshift tents are available in both vanilla and premium flavours for those looking to stay overnight at the desert and do some sunrise-sunset-moonrise photography. Speaking of which, this year there is also a photography competition being conducted.
Rann Utsav is a cultural extravaganza that takes place at various locations within Kutch in Gujarat, India. The midnight camel Safari is something that one cannot miss out on. This Utsav or fair showcases traditional art forms of India. The fair celebrates the diversity and uniqueness of the Kutch district and highlights the cultural splendor of Gujarat. Held annually during the full moon time in winters, the Rann Kutch Utsav features Kutch that is widely different with finely diffused spectrum of Indian traditional art forms. The Utsav includes cultural and folk dances, music, craftsmanship, carnival processions, pageantry and an encapsulation of the true spirit and zeal of Kutch inhabitants. Enjoying the shades of full moon with folk music and dance forms in chilling winters is an enchanting experience.
The Rann Utsav is a unique opportunity for people around the world to visit Kutch and experience the true flavor of this beautiful arid region. Enjoy evening bonfires and watch artisans at work. Dance with the local folk dancers and enjoy going for camel safaris. The beautiful traditional and ethnic stuff displayed by local artists and NGOs is worth buying.Local artisans put up handicrafts and traditional Gujarati textiles for sale. Popular Ajrakh block printed fabrics, shawls and bandhani with intricate embroideries make for great souvenirs.
See the Rann of Kutch from a different perspective from Kalo Dungar (Black Hill), around 70 kilometers from Bhuj, which provides an expansive view all the way across to the Pakistani border. The Lakhpat Fort (140 kilometers from Bhuj) also provides a great view of the white desert.
The beauty of this arid, high contrast landscape is sure to create an indelible memory – add salt to taste!
